Let's Read! Outpatient Clinic Reading Program
In order to encourage interest in books and reading during the time our young patients spend in our clinic, we launched Let's Read in March 2006. We are making an effort to provide new books and learning opportunities in the clinic every weekday because school-aged patients often miss a lot of school during the course of treatment. The focus is especially on toddlers and elementary school-aged children, although we are also offering new books to all older patients.
We have volunteers who match books to the interests and age level of each child. The volunteers are also happy to spend time reading to the children. We want the children to take the books home with them to keep and enjoy.
We owe many thanks to the Friends of Kids with Cancer for providing the books for this program for the first year (2006) of it. Now in our second year, we are thankful to Mary Beth's Angels Foundation for a very generous grant to purchase more new books. In addition to the large grants, new books have been donated by schools, parents, and children. These gifts help us to continue our efforts to respond personally to our patients and to do something positive for them through the world of books.
