Our Division of Hematology/Oncology is a part of the Washington University Department of Pediatrics and is located in St. Louis Children's Hospital. It has a diverse staff to meet the many needs of our patients and families. We have a highly qualified team of physicians, advanced practice nurses, research staff, a psychosocial team, administrative staff, data managers, office staff, and dedicated volunteers. We would like to let you get to know more about these people. In the future on these pages, you will see some individual profiles about our staff.

About the Doctors

In the hospital and in the clinic, you will meet a lot of doctors! Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) is one of the best in the world, and many fine doctors receive training through the School of Medicine, in cooperation with the surrounding BJC Hospitals. After completing college, future doctors spend another four years in medical school, where they attend classes and work in hospitals under the close supervision of other doctors. The students you meet will be in their third or fourth year of medical training. Some of the nation's finest physician-scientists are also working and training at WUSM.

After earning an M.D. degree, doctors usually obtain additional training in one area of medicine, such as pediatrics or surgery. The pediatric residency program at St. Louis Children's Hospital is three years long. You may meet doctors in their first year of training (interns) or later on when they are even more experienced. After residency ends, some doctors choose to obtain even more specialized training (fellows) in an area like pediatric hematology and oncology. Students, residents, and fellows are closely supervised by attending physicians. The medical staff of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology of WUSM are the teachers for younger physicians.

About the Nurses and Support Staff

All of our nurses are trained to work specifically with children with cancer or other blood-related diseases, such as sickle cell disease. Working along with the nurses and doctors are the medical technicians, data managers, office staff, psychosocial team, and volunteers. By checking the Clinic, 9West, and Psychosocial Team pages in this section, you will learn more about the entire staff. Before long on these pages you will see photos of our staff and get to know who they are.
