The St. Louis
Children's Hospital bone marrow/stem cell transplant unit has been
in operation since 1991. Since that time our transplant unit has
grown from a 2-bed to a 6 -bed
unit. Our newly remodeled unit includes a separate conference room
for consultations with parents, teaching experiences, and daily
rounds for our patients. An important addition has been that each of the patient rooms has an anteroom for additional infection control measures and nursing
preparation. We also have a new parent lounge furnished with home
amenities for our parents to use. We are centrally located just
west of downtown. Families are provided informational materials
on restaurants, lodging, and places for recreational activity including
nearby Forest Park.
Nursing personnel
working within our transplant unit are specialty trained in both
BMT issues and critical care, with yearly educational review, in
order to provide the care these children require. Our transplant
patients also benefit from daily physical therapy for mobility,
child life services for play therapy and medical play, as well as
ongoing parental and patient education and information from the
BMT coordinator/PNP who is responsible for the day-to-day care of
these patients.
When children
are referred to our institution for transplantation, the educational,
emotional, spiritual, and financial preparation begins. All children
and their families initially meet all team members and then begin
formal evaluations with each member of the team to ensure that all
aspects of this patient's life are addressed. This informational
program is individually tailored to the patient and family's needs
as assessed by each team member.
St. Louis Children's
Hospital hematology/oncology program is unique in that we provide
a multidisciplinary approach to patient care for our patients. Our
BMT unit is fortunate to be part of this program which includes
dietary, psychology, child life, school liaison, chaplain, pharmacy,
social work, nurse coordinators and nurse practitioners, as well as specialty
fellows and attending physicians in every aspect of patient care.
Our staff is available for consult for all of our patients 24 hours
a day and specifically trained to meet the special needs of our
BMT patients.
